Headquartered in Bentonville, Ark., the Walton Family Foundation was created by Sam M. Walton, founder of Walmart, and his wife Helen R. Walton. The foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations in three major areas:
- Systemic K-12 education reform;
- Marine and freshwater conservation; and
- Community development in the northwest region of Arkansas and the Mississippi River delta region of Arkansas and Mississippi;
A family-based board of directors provides overall direction for the program areas. A staff/consultant base of approximately 50 conducts the day-to-day operations.
