The International Seafood Sustainability - ISSF

In May 2011, The International Seafood Sustainability Foundation, a grantee in our marine conservation initiative, launched its first cruise of a project aimed at reducing bycatch in tuna fisheries globally. Bycatch is the marine life captured during fishing that vessels did not intend to target. The goal of this project is to work with fishers to identify better practices and techniques, including technologies and fishing gear improvements that can minimize the impact of fishing for tuna on the marine environment.

In addition to their work on the water, ISSF also facilitates workshops for the fishing community to share ideas and knowledge. To date, these workshops have been held in tuna ports in the Pacific Islands region, the Americas, Africa and Europe.

Scientists Work Side-by-Side with Fishers

Tuna fish are integral to the marine ecosystem and fundamental to the diets of millions, which means protecting this precious natural resource must be a priority.

The International Seafood Sustainability Foundation brings together all stakeholders in order to work on solutions that will allow tuna fishermen to continue making a living at sea while ensuring that the resources available today are maintained for future generations.

A global coalition of leading scientists, the tuna industry, and WWF, advocates for nations to take a more responsible role in conservation and leverages the direct action of industry to push for progress even faster.
