Walton Family Foundation Launches Home Region Strategy 2030 to Expand Opportunity and Strengthen Communities

May 6, 2026
Economic mobility, workforce readiness and regional collaboration anchor the approach

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (May 6, 2026) — The Walton Family Foundation's Home Region Program today announced the plan for its next five-year grantmaking cycle. The framework will guide the foundation’s work in Northwest Arkansas and the Arkansas-Mississippi Delta to expand access to opportunity and prepare communities for a stronger, more prosperous future.

The new strategy builds on the foundation’s mission to address complex social and economic challenges through investments in improving community systems, infrastructure and regional collaboration. The vision for the two regions is to enhance the quality of life and ensure residents have the tools and pathways to succeed.

In Northwest Arkansas, the goal is for the region to cement itself as one of the most vibrant and welcoming places in the nation. In the Delta, the foundation is supporting local leaders driving changes that ensure all residents can access the resources needed to learn, build assets and lead their communities.

“For generations, our family has believed that opportunity should be within reach for everyone,” said Tom Walton, chair of the Walton Family Foundation’s Home Region Program committee. “The strategy reflects that commitment by investing in people, communities and systems to expand opportunity, support growth and drive long-term success.”

Over the next five years, the foundation will focus on expanding economic mobility, strengthening education and workforce readiness, investing in community infrastructure and supporting partnerships across the public, private and philanthropic sectors.

“The most meaningful progress happens when communities help shape the solutions that affect their future,” said Home Region Program Director Robert Burns. “That’s why this work emphasizes collaboration and a forward-focused approach to building thriving, resilient regions.”

  • The Northwest Arkansas strategy will include strengthening civic infrastructure through investments in housing, transportation and essential systems, as well as supporting shared spaces and civic engagement opportunities so residents can participate in deciding how their communities will grow. The foundation will also focus on enhancing economic opportunity and supporting entrepreneurs by expanding access to capital and strengthening education-to-career pathways so residents can gain the skills needed for meaningful work in a dynamic regional economy.
  • The Arkansas-Mississippi Delta strategy will emphasize education and economic stability as key drivers of long-term opportunity. The foundation will invest in strengthening the educator workforce and improving access to high-quality instructional materials, while also expanding educational options such as after-school programs and career-connected learning. Additional efforts in the Delta will support economic asset building by increasing pathways to homeownership and financial stability, strengthening workforce connections and enhancing small business resilience to broaden local economic opportunity.

The Walton Family Foundation will continue to work alongside partners across sectors to advance solutions shaped by local communities and designed for lasting impact.
