What Teachers’ Extra Jobs Reveal About Supporting the Profession

A new Walton Family Foundation and Gallup study finds that 71% of teachers hold at least one second job. Nearly one in three works in roles outside education, often during the school year. Those under the greatest strain are also more likely to feel burned out.

Even so, commitment to students remains strong. Two-thirds of teachers plan to stay in K-12 education for the rest of their careers, including more than half who expect to remain in the classroom.

Supporting teachers means recognizing both their dedication and the pressures they face. Stability and strong supports help more educators build long-term careers in the classroom.
