Analyzing the Diversity of Options in D.C., Denver and New Orleans

Center on Reinventing Public Education

CRPE analyzed the portfolio of options in Denver, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C.—three cities that offer both district-run schools and charter schools run by multiple operators. They examined the publicly available data that a family might use to make decisions, including parent guides and school and district websites. Using these sources, they gathered information on the educational programs in district and charter schools to identify schools’ overarching curricular foci, instructional approaches, and extra programmatic offerings. Findings show that in each of these cities—and likely others—there is more diversity in school models and educational approaches than one might think.
