Investing in Opportunity, Rooted in Place

May 6, 2026
The foundation's Home Region strategy reflects our commitment to strengthening communities so more people can learn, earn and thrive close to home.

What does it take to build a region where growth strengthens communities and opportunity reaches everyone?

As the foundation's Home Region Program Director, I have the privilege of working alongside people across Northwest Arkansas and the Arkansas–Mississippi Delta who are answering that question every day. What I’ve learned in my time here is both simple and powerful: Opportunity grows when people can learn, earn and thrive in the places they call home.

Today, I’m excited to share Strategy 2030, the Walton Family Foundation’s grantmaking commitment to our Home Region.

In Northwest Arkansas, investments moving forward will center on what will make our fast-growing region stay vibrant and welcoming for everyone.

As more people choose to live and work here, we’re supporting the development of infrastructure that keeps pace—housing, transportation and essential systems—alongside a strong civic ecosystem where people feel welcome to gather, serve and find solutions together. We’re also investing in economic opportunity—helping entrepreneurs grow businesses and ensuring more residents can access clear pathways to meaningful, in-demand careers.

In the Delta, our focus will continue to be on the foundations that support long-term community vitality. That starts with education—supporting teachers, expanding learning opportunities and helping young people see a future for themselves close to home. It also means investing in local leadership and economic foundations, from small business support and workforce pathways to homeownership and financial security, so families can build generational stability and communities grow stronger over time.

The future of this region will be built by the people who live here. Our commitment is to support that work, every step of the way.

Across both regions, one thing is clear: future work in the region will succeed not only through philanthropic investment, but through communities invested in shaping their own future.

Our role at the foundation is not to direct from a distance, but to work alongside local leaders, organizations and partners who are already doing the work. When people are connected—to opportunity, to one another and to a shared sense of purpose—momentum builds. And when partners work together, that momentum turns into real, lasting progress.

Strategy 2030 is about focused investment, but it’s also about possibility. Supporting communities as they prepare for the future in thoughtful, practical ways—so growth leads to greater opportunity, and more people can shape what comes next.

The future of this region will be built by the people who live here. Our commitment is to support that work, every step of the way.
